Dr. Thomas Stricklin Annual History Scholarship
Dr. Thomas Edgar Stricklin was born on November 12, 1932, in Eden, Mississippi, a small delta farm village of 200 inhabitants. He was the youngest child of Avery & Julia Stricklin.
After graduating from Yazoo City High School in 1950, he attended Mississippi College, the University of Alabama, and Mississippi State where he received his PhD in history. He married Marjorie Stricklin in 1960 after they met while both were teaching at Hinds College.
Dr. Stricklin taught European history at ULM for many years with Tudor-Stuart England as his area of expertise. Under his leadership, ULM’s Epsilon Tau chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society, won best national chapter eighteen times. He oversaw and advised many graduate students and chaired faculty search committees.
Dr. Stricklin and his wife were founding members of Northminster Church in Monroe. As his wife wrote of him in a short biography, "Imparting historical knowledge and working with students was his career calling. He had no interest in writing scholarly papers, although he was well-equipped to do so, and directed many masters theses. When told he’d never be promoted to full professor because he refused to publish, he said, ‘So be it, I only want to teach and work with students.’ And his former students are very grateful for his commitment to them.
