Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1809 J. W. Hackworth Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship has been named The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1809 J. W. Hackworth Memorial Scholarship. The purpose is to provide scholarships for deserving students and to honor the legacy of J.W. Hackworth.

J.W. began his military service in the U.S. Army on July 28, 1943. He served in an anti-tank company in Italy as part
of the 91st Infantry Division, attached to the 363rd Infantry Regiment. His combat service included Po Valley and the North Apennines. He was honorably discharged after Victory in Europe was declared and he returned home in February of 1946. Because of his loyalty and dedication to his country, Hackworth re-enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1946 where he faithfully served until February 1950.
